The Wheel Of Time (WoT)

The wheel of time by Robert Jordan is my favorite series.

If you think of a cliche’ epic fantasy novel you can’t overlook what Robert Jordan has done for the genre. I think the story appeals to me because well its and anthology, with more books and words than most people read in multiple years.

Now I’ve already stated that it’s my favorite series of books, that does not mean that it’s the best series that I’ve read or the most thoughtful etc… I do love the fantasy aspect, as a person who loves role playing games, the wheel of time really has that aspect come out to play.

A story essentially about three boys and their adventure trying to save the world again and again and again. Each of the 14 books has its ups and downs but the first 4 books, are the reason I want to write and love to read. The story is captivating and makes it really hard to put the book down because you must know what happens next.

So here we go, Rand al’ Thor ( an easy name in this series) is a young man when the books start around the age of 18, from a small town in the middle of nowhere. The last place to receive any news, and born of a people who are stubborn and have a will to survive. Something that this book beats into your skull in the first book. Rand has two friends Matrim Cauthon, and Perrin Aybarra, his two best friends and future travel companions.

So in the end, these books have it all, romance though poorly written. Heroes, anti heroes, good guys, bad guys, political intrigue, more political intrigue, more political intrigue well you get the picture. With all of this plot, and there is a lot of it as I mentioned earlier 14 books. The smallest book being around 700 pages. There is a lot to get through, but if You want a series that has it all and you love fantasy fiction i encourage or better yet implore you to pick it up.

College, Is really Fucking Expensive.

College is really fucking expensive “education”.

How do I know this, well a combination of research and personal experience. lets take a look at an in-state tuition fees and costs of UW Milwaukee a very popular choice for schooling in Wisconsin. Tuition based on 12-18 credits is about 9,500 for a 9 month enrollment period. That does not sound so bad over the course of 4 years, about $38,000 for 4 years of schooling.

Now a closer look at the other costs for school; room and board, meals, transportation and books and supplies.

Dorm rooms cost on average about $6500 dollars per academic year (from UW Milwaukee’s website)

Apartment rates near the school a 1 bedroom apartment is about $1000 dollars a month (including utilities) so about $12,000 for a full year or $9,000 for the academic year. This gets tricky with leases and housing after school.

Parking at the facilities is about 100 dollars a month.

A meal plan about $3700 dollars per academic year. (does not cover full cost of average students meals per year)

Transportation while at campus totaled an average of $1,073 dollars per academic year.

Book and supply costs can be anywhere from 400-1000+ per academic year.

So we have per year right now, about $23,000 in costs.

WOW!!!!!!!

What about living costs, just being alive, I getting an early morning energy drink to finish off the cram session you just had for 3 different finals you have on that next day. Just to make it through your class. Or going and having fun, which you need to do.

According to many findings, from the mayo clinic and the 2006 American College Health association survey about 40% of college goers are depressed. Some to the point that they feel they cannot function on a normal level.

So let’s say, for fun and other options to try and avoiding mental health issues and a value of living any sane person would want we allocate another $1000 dollars for your personal and mental health.

Healthcare planes, if you have no healthcare most colleges will require you to get their own health care, which costs will vary between schools, but for UW Milwaukee is about $700

So, all in all for 9 months of living, only 3 quarters of the year, your costs are $24,700.

Now, the worst part of the whole thing…. How is an 18 year old, with at most a few years of work experience supposed to pay for all of this?

OH I know!!!! Let’s get financial aid, but on average according to USA today students only get around $10,000 dollars in student aid.

So awesome we now have to cover the $14,700 in costs. Ok so I guess I’ll work at a part time job. Also take 18 credits because I want to graduate in 4 years. So I will spend a total of 50-75 hours a week on academic work. No problem, that gives me plenty of time to sleep, and play and eat… I think.

OK OK OK, so if I make the average part time hourly rate of 9.61 based on information done by BLS. Take, about 24% of that and give it a way to taxes, if none of that is commission or tips, then take almost 40% of that and give it to taxes. So no tips, 9.61 and after tax I’ll be making $7.31 per hour.

So now lets, take 14,700 and divide that by 7.31 to get how many hours we need to work to pay that off.

Ok, so that is about 2,011 hours. Wow that seems like a lot of hours. So divide that by 12 months, lets say you work all year. That is a seemingly doable 167 hours per month. But divide that by 4 for the average amount of weeks and you have to work over forty hours per week!

Dang, so if I don’t want to take out any private loans I will be spending between 90-115 hours per week work and school. That is more than two full time jobs. There are only 168 hours in a week. Ok, so let’s say you get to eat three meals, a day at 15 minutes per meal. That’s another 5.25 hours. Now how about the time it takes to get to and from where you’re going, walking, biking, driving or getting a ride. Living on campus, lets say you spend an average 10 hours per week, just traveling around to get to where you need. Class, work etc.

Now we have 105 hours at minimum only spent just between eating, traveling, classes, and working.

But I want to sleep too, if I could because its healthy 8 hours per day that comes to 56 hours. So at minimum now I have 161 hours of the 168 hours in a week used up, just eating, sleeping, traveling and working.

If I have tough classes, then, I am at 186 hours of 168. Ummmm….. Something needs to give. So I sleep less, now I only sleep 4 hours per day.

So I can live.

I know all of this seems extreme but seriously something needs to give. The high prices of tuition and post high school living is out of this world. More millennials are having mental health issues from anxiety to depression and I believe that College is the reason.

THIS IS A PROBLEM. We say we are the smartest, most industrious people in the world can’t we find a solution to this problem.

I hope this gets around, I implore you to do your own research and if you have been in college recently you know the plight.

I do not even go over the future problems you might have after college. Paying off your loans, finding a job living in a place not your parents…

So many issues reside just on this fact, let’s all get together and fix this!!!!!!

30 years being heroic

We all know that fireman are heroic, they spare their bodies to save strangers houses, families and livelihoods. Some people even do this voluntarily, people like my dad. For those of you who don’t know he is and has been a volunteer firefighter for 30 years! He’s not even 50, starting at the ripe old age of 19.

A few things firefighters agree on.

~You might be firefighter if you’ve said “she’s hot tonight” and not been talking about a pretty lady.

~You might be a firefighter if you know that a back draft isn’t your friend breaking wind

~You might be a firefighter if climbing the corporate ladder has nothing to do with getting promoted at work.

An ode to my Dad, Thomas Michels!

For thirty years.

You have laid your body mind and soul to help and save others.

Your heart is made of gold, and your head is made of stone.

You have always been there for me and those I call brothers.

I just hope you don’t lose your funny bone.

For thirty years.

Most of all you have been you, a stalwart brother and a loving father.

You’ve made bad choices and good, but remember, I will love you forever.

You have laughed, you’ve cried, you’ve proven to be stronger.

Don’t let time keep you at bay Never say Never.

For thirty years.

Even after all you’ve done you have yet to finish. Remember always those around you.

Because we will not forget your faith and loyalty. Your courage or your smile too.

I hope you read this and remember all the good you’ve done.

I know you won’t stop having fun.

Dad this is for you! For your good and bad advice. For your wise old sayings you have yet to uncover.

For your hard head and resolute mind. This Dad was an ode to you.

It feels like forever

Goodness, its been over a week since iv’e last posted.

So this last week I have been for lack of a better term rather busy. You know holding a full time job, keeping a wife happy and getting carbon-monoxide poisoning, to tell you the truth its been an odd week.

petpeeves_hudsonsoundsdcr0800h1

So I just wanted to get on here and talk about pet-peeves

What is a pet-peeve in short it is: Something that really bothers somebody, something they hate, either an action an ideal even a word.

So here is a list that well really grinds my gears!

  • The word Anyways, not a thing, for the love of god please stop pluralizing the word anyway there is no need…. Seriously stop…. Don’t do it on purpose (fire and death)
  • Smoking in a large crowd of people. Recently at a packer game i was subjugated to smoking on three sides while climbing the entrance steps, smoke away from other people. Just because you want to kill yourself doesn’t mean you should kill us. K thanks
  • People who complain about cell phone service yet have no idea how it works. Trust me, its harder to implement than you could possibly imagine so shut up
  • People who talk on their cellphone when in a checkout or are looking to be helped in a customer service environment please stop
  • People who literally hate having a job. Okay i get it your lazy, so quit and let someone who needs and wants the job work
  • Facebook for automatically playing videos I don’t want to see
  • Women storing things in their bra(phones, money, whatever else you store in there) gross
  • Forcing your religious views on others, including Atheists. I BELIEVE what i will and please stop telling me i’m going to hell
  •  People who think that they are “entitled” because you make a lot of money, have a rich family, been with a company for however many years. (shut up) I don’t want to hear why you think you should get to go to the front of the line. Or why your time is sooooo much more valuable than mine. Quit being an asshole and wait patiently like the rest of us
  • I hate that there still is the concept of “race”. Black, white, hispanic, asian yada yada yada. Guess what, we are all people so start acting like it
  • People who ignore facts and argue based on emotion alone. You are unreasonable open up your mind
  • “Noisy Eaters” you know the people you try and avoid eating with because you cringe every time they shovel food in to masticate
  • When you ask somebody you care about “whats wrong” They say nothing but are obviously torn up inside
  • Ugg boots in the summer
  • People who park in handicapped spots when they aren’t handicapped….
  • People who own a sports car yet never take it over 65
  • People who have strong opinions on books when they have never read

That is just the start.

What are your Pet-Peeves?

Day 1 – Double Unemployment

An inspirational blog…
By the way warm cookies sound comforting.
Write like this and go places!

Brock Heasley

This oft-neglected blog now has something it’s never had before–my undivided attention. Congratulations, blog, I’m unemployed. This is bound to be upsetting, hilarious and hopeful.

Friday – August 29, 2014

CharlieBrownFootballI got laid off today and it was awesome. I don’t mean “awesome” in the overused, exulting sense, but in the “Aw, #$%@!” sense. I guess I sort of saw it coming because I woke up sick to my stomach every morning this week for no discernible reason. I wasn’t ill, I hadn’t eaten anything problematic the nights before. I just felt vomity anxiety. Didn’t think it was leading to getting laid off, but there you go. Basically, I was Charlie Brown. I should have maybe guessed Lucy would take the football away, but I sure didn’t expect her to up and run off with it.

I walked out of the boss’ office feeling numb and panicky and kind of dead. I was the undead, really…

We’ve done a lot of cool things in the last 10 years but…

It seems to me that we still have so many problems. We have all this cool stuff, I mean its pretty awesome but I still feel betrayed.

Its like Your dad giving you a new toy because he wants to distract you from whats happening outside in the real world.

.shiny-object     iphone_6_6plus_primary-100413338-orig-100429603-medium.idge

We are being given access to tech, to vast amounts of information that we couldn’t have fathomed 10 years ago.

That toy is hiding the fact, that he is running out of money. His friends are getting smarter, richer and mom is off gallivanting with “uncle”. When we get bored with our toy, he tells us to turn on the TV, but the TV is telling us that everybody hates us and people are dying. Ebola is spreading and the world is going to end.
But when I sit at home with that new toy he brought home again, everything seems right in the world as it should be. The curtain forever being pulled over my eyes.

Sooner or later someone will look outside and see Greener grass, a sunny day, and a strong breeze and realize its potential. I hope its you.

LGTB Rights! Why its time!

We as a nation, as people on this earth are moving forward and so should our Ideas.

I am not Gay, Transgender or Bisexual

For those of you that know me I am not religious, please do not take what I am about say as offensive I just ask for you to listen with an open mind and heart.

Nearly 4% of the united states is LGBT.

As children we are taught many things, including respect. We are taught to do onto others we wish done to ourselves. We were taught beliefs; belief in god, belief in yourself, belief your friends and those around you. We are taught RESPECT.

So why,  for so many people do we forget it when we are introduced to something new?

When you see a Gay or Lesbian Couple walking down the street and yell your bigotry, your slander! Faggot, Heathen, HOMO! Stop please, no one deserves to get yelled at for how they live. Just like it is okay to accept other religions its okay to accept other Sexual preferences. You will not be though of “less of a man”.

There are things that we should stop saying, things we think are right and just offend. For a more in depth look please click on the link at the beginning of the paragraph.

I am personally tired of listening to the religious backlash towards LGTB. Please listen to my argument, if I can change one mind i made a difference.

  1. God made us in his “image” without GOD there would be no homosexual tendencies
  2. no where in the bible does Jesus Christ admonish homosexuality
  3. In the Bible it is taught to love thy neighbors, are they(we) not your neighbor
  4. Love thy brother, are they(we) not your brothers and sisters
  5. Love your enemies are (we) not their enemy

I have no organized religion, I do not follow scripture, I do follow my heart. What does your heart tell you? To be tolerant, loving, accepting or even inviting?

Being LGTB is not a “condition” and henceforth can’t be fixed. So please stop trying, stop hindering the social growth and happiness that can be achieved.

On “Same Sex” Marriage

a (1) :  the state of being united to a person of the opposite sex as husband or wife in a consensual and contractual relationship recognized by law (2) :  the state of being united to a person of the same sex in a relationship like that of a traditional marriage

Marriage is now recognized in the dictionary as including “Same Sex” Marriage.

Why should we deny to those who would want it the Happiness they deserve. Including in this the Happiness that the united states were found on.

The declaration of Independence~ We hold these truths to be sacred & undeniable; that all men are created equal & independent, that from that equal creation they derive rights inherent & inalienable, among which are the preservation of life, & liberty, & the pursuit of happiness!

Is marriage not a human right!

What is life without Marriage, without Liberty, the liberty to act upon the free will bestowed upon you by god. The liberty to choose, to have a choice.

I call upon Everyone to help change the world and help all MEN and WOMEN be equal in the rights we share..

I also call upon all of those who have made rude comments, derogatory statements and unlawful assault and slander to repent and apologize as is your right as a human.

4% Its time to accept reality, live love laugh and learn!

I have been married 3 months

Happy-Baby-Photo

I realize that when I have children they very well could be gay. I have no problem with this, and neither should you. We can not pick and choose who we bring into this world just as they can’t choose who they are.

You should have no right to hate my child for something they had no choice in. Just like we shouldn’t hate people for the color of their skin or where they were born.

I hope to one day rock my child to sleep at night, to kiss there forehead and lay them down peacefully and safely in their bed. To cover them and read them a bedtime story in a 1000 different voices.

to kiss their BooBoos, for their first day of school and will not love them any less if they are gay. I will raise them with my wife, I will raise them not YOU. They will be able to make it in this world, with people unbiased towards them if we can all get together and make a choice.

I’m not saying I’m perfect, prejudiced lives in all of us. An internal biased, but we can move past it and overcome it.

The views in this blog are my own, and I will stand by them. Make your choice.

I hope i Helped at least one person, thank you for listening.

Share your story and views, share this with the world. Edit it, make it your own but its time to change!

Why Can’t we all be this awesome… because we aren’t, but we can try!

~Helen Keller

It is inspiration quotes like these, said by some of the greatest people in history that keep me wanting to improve myself and the world.

We can all learn a thing or two from the lives of these great individuals!

Making a change!

So I have been doing a lot of thinking lately…
I don’t really understand why, I in the last two weeks have felt like I needed to start making a change.
Not just a change in my life or those closest to me but a change in the world.
Is it just wanting to make a name for myself, or just tired of doing nothing?
I would personally like to think it’s the former, as naturally I’m an optimist.

So what in your mind, my readers needs to change?

What can we do?

Whether it’s education, the economy or even fixing the issues in our community.
Let’s make a change together.

Random Act of Kindness 10 small things to change someone’s day

poor_kitten

I know I feel better when I give then When i Receive- Here are 10 ways to give back every day.

1. Hold the door open for someone. Now this isn’t gender specific guys and girls can take part. The secret to this innocuous task is to smile and if they do not say thanks, that’s okay. Smile regardless and feel better

this can go along with holding the elevator, opening up the car door and sliding out the seat for your significant other.

2. Tip well to your server. Remember a time when you worked in the service industry making it day by day based on how others perceive your job performance?

If you can afford an extra five, it goes a long way

3. Call someone you love. Listen to what they have to say whether its a grandparent your mom or dad even a sibling you haven’t spoken to in a while.  Call and say “Thanks and I love you”

4. Stop and give thanks. Thank a Janitor, thank the person making your morning coffee or the person behind the counter at McDonalds.

5. Let someone in your lane, I know you’re in a rush they probably are too. When you do it waive and smile, if someone lets you in do the same.

6. Adopt a pet from a shelter, just because they are older doesn’t mean they don’t need love

7. If you know someone going through a tough breakup, having a hard time or just downtrodden, get them a pick me up basket of their favorite things!

8. Write something nice on a friends blog post or Facebook post.

9. Put your phone away, stop texting, tweeting and Facebooking. Talk… you know with your voice.

10. Smile, shake hands, hug, listen and empathize with those around you and your life will be more fulfilling!
