College is really fucking expensive “education”.
How do I know this, well a combination of research and personal experience. lets take a look at an in-state tuition fees and costs of UW Milwaukee a very popular choice for schooling in Wisconsin. Tuition based on 12-18 credits is about 9,500 for a 9 month enrollment period. That does not sound so bad over the course of 4 years, about $38,000 for 4 years of schooling.
Now a closer look at the other costs for school; room and board, meals, transportation and books and supplies.
Dorm rooms cost on average about $6500 dollars per academic year (from UW Milwaukee’s website)
Apartment rates near the school a 1 bedroom apartment is about $1000 dollars a month (including utilities) so about $12,000 for a full year or $9,000 for the academic year. This gets tricky with leases and housing after school.
Parking at the facilities is about 100 dollars a month.
A meal plan about $3700 dollars per academic year. (does not cover full cost of average students meals per year)
Transportation while at campus totaled an average of $1,073 dollars per academic year.
Book and supply costs can be anywhere from 400-1000+ per academic year.
So we have per year right now, about $23,000 in costs.
What about living costs, just being alive, I getting an early morning energy drink to finish off the cram session you just had for 3 different finals you have on that next day. Just to make it through your class. Or going and having fun, which you need to do.
According to many findings, from the mayo clinic and the 2006 American College Health association survey about 40% of college goers are depressed. Some to the point that they feel they cannot function on a normal level.
So let’s say, for fun and other options to try and avoiding mental health issues and a value of living any sane person would want we allocate another $1000 dollars for your personal and mental health.
Healthcare planes, if you have no healthcare most colleges will require you to get their own health care, which costs will vary between schools, but for UW Milwaukee is about $700
So, all in all for 9 months of living, only 3 quarters of the year, your costs are $24,700.
Now, the worst part of the whole thing…. How is an 18 year old, with at most a few years of work experience supposed to pay for all of this?
OH I know!!!! Let’s get financial aid, but on average according to USA today students only get around $10,000 dollars in student aid.
So awesome we now have to cover the $14,700 in costs. Ok so I guess I’ll work at a part time job. Also take 18 credits because I want to graduate in 4 years. So I will spend a total of 50-75 hours a week on academic work. No problem, that gives me plenty of time to sleep, and play and eat… I think.
OK OK OK, so if I make the average part time hourly rate of 9.61 based on information done by BLS. Take, about 24% of that and give it a way to taxes, if none of that is commission or tips, then take almost 40% of that and give it to taxes. So no tips, 9.61 and after tax I’ll be making $7.31 per hour.
So now lets, take 14,700 and divide that by 7.31 to get how many hours we need to work to pay that off.
Ok, so that is about 2,011 hours. Wow that seems like a lot of hours. So divide that by 12 months, lets say you work all year. That is a seemingly doable 167 hours per month. But divide that by 4 for the average amount of weeks and you have to work over forty hours per week!
Dang, so if I don’t want to take out any private loans I will be spending between 90-115 hours per week work and school. That is more than two full time jobs. There are only 168 hours in a week. Ok, so let’s say you get to eat three meals, a day at 15 minutes per meal. That’s another 5.25 hours. Now how about the time it takes to get to and from where you’re going, walking, biking, driving or getting a ride. Living on campus, lets say you spend an average 10 hours per week, just traveling around to get to where you need. Class, work etc.
Now we have 105 hours at minimum only spent just between eating, traveling, classes, and working.
But I want to sleep too, if I could because its healthy 8 hours per day that comes to 56 hours. So at minimum now I have 161 hours of the 168 hours in a week used up, just eating, sleeping, traveling and working.
If I have tough classes, then, I am at 186 hours of 168. Ummmm….. Something needs to give. So I sleep less, now I only sleep 4 hours per day.
So I can live.
I know all of this seems extreme but seriously something needs to give. The high prices of tuition and post high school living is out of this world. More millennials are having mental health issues from anxiety to depression and I believe that College is the reason.
THIS IS A PROBLEM. We say we are the smartest, most industrious people in the world can’t we find a solution to this problem.
I hope this gets around, I implore you to do your own research and if you have been in college recently you know the plight.
I do not even go over the future problems you might have after college. Paying off your loans, finding a job living in a place not your parents…
So many issues reside just on this fact, let’s all get together and fix this!!!!!!
